Hello o_hsers! I've had a browse through the memories but  nothing answered my questions exactly/some stuff was just from 2008.
Anyway, I'm currently applying for Masters courses and I was wondering about other people's experiences?
1) What did you study and where?
2)How many courses did you apply for?
3)Did you live at home or in the place you were studying?
4)How did you fund it?
5)Are you glad you did it?
6)Have you found it useful career-wise?

Any other useful info is also very much appreciated!

Thanks lovelies!

1. MSc International Public Policy at UCL

2. Only two, the one at UCL and an IR course at Birkbeck

3. I lived at my parents and commuted into London. It wasn't great, but financially I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise. And, because I found it a lot more intense than Undergrad it probably helped in some ways.

4. I used my savings - the tuition fee is still the largest amount I've ever paid for anything in one go.

5. For me, I just wasn't ready to go out and start a career and it was an area I wanted to study. So I am glad I did it but...

6. If I'd gone into NGO-work like I'd intended to then I'm sure it would have been useful, however as I fell into a career in online media instead I can't say I've used either of my degrees, aside from the fact that the positions I've done required a degree, but certainly not masters.

At most it's now a talking point in job interviews. While I don't think it's seen negatively, I nearly always get asked why I have a masters degree.

1) What did you study and where? - I'm currently studying for an MA in library & information management at liverpool john moores.
2)How many courses did you apply for? Only this one. Got straight onto it at last minute haha.
3)Did you live at home or in the place you were studying? Still at home - couldn't afford to move out
4)How did you fund it? Luckily my parents have funded it. I know I am so lucky to have financial support from my parents. My boyfriend did a masters and had to get a career development loan from the co-op for his MSc
5)Are you glad you did it? Yes! I really love librarianship.
6)Have you found it useful career-wise? Yes, I did. We did a 3 week work placement in January and since then I have been working as a casual trainee librarian for them and there are some vacancies coming up soon there so it's looking positive. I'm glad I did this MA rather than an MA in english lit (which is what I did my BA in) because it's more focussed on your future career and teaches you about business, management, etc. Definitely given me more career prospects than a lit MA would have.

This is great, thank you! Just out of curiousity..what does studying for librarianship actually entail? I've always wondered this!

I'm starting mine in September!

1. Creative Writing at UEA.
2. I applied to five - UEA, Glasgow, MMU, University of Manchester and a London polly, can't remember which.
3. I'm going to move to Norwich.
4. I've automatically been entered for several bursaries based on my application, but if they don't come through I've got some inheritance saved up.
5. n/a
6. n/a

Thanks for replying :)
Are you going into your postgraduate studies straight after finishing your undergrad?

I'm in the midst of an enforced year out, as UEA would only consider me for a 2010 entry. I was accepted by Glasgow, MMU and the London one, but I decided to gamble and go with UEA, which paid off but... It's hell! I want to be there now, dammit!

1) Freshwater And Coastal Science, it was split between UCL and Queen Mary in London

2)Just this one

3)Lived at home - couldn't afford to live in London

4)I had some savings, but I was also very lucky in that I was given a £2000 bursary, and supported by my parents

5)Yes very much so, I met great people and really enjoyed studying the subject

6) Not hugely; although I think that's more to do with the current job market than the qualification itself.

Good luck with it all! My course was a lot (a LOT) of work but so worth it, I think I really got a lot out of it.

I'm planning on doing one next year so slightly different but

1)What did you study and where?
Planning on doing Publishing, either at City or UCL
2)How many courses did you apply for?
Just those two. I was planning on applying for more, but got offered a place at City quite quickly and that was originally my first choice so...
3)Did you live at home or in the place you were studying?
Planning on living in London (going to be broke!) - so the place I'll be studying
4)How did you fund it?
I'm seriously lucky and my parents are helping me out, and I've been working for a year so I have money saved up to help with not starving, getting places, etc.
5)Are you glad you did it?
N/A
6)Have you found it useful career-wise?
I'm hoping it will be! I'm already working in the industry so I'm kind of hoping it'll point me more in the direction I want to be working in, although maybe not immediately!

this might not be too useful but:

i am doing a masters through my school; i am a secondary teacher and am doing an MTL at the institute of education.

it is funded by the government/school so it is free to me thank god otherwise i would not have been able to do one!

it will hopefully be super useful as i want to do a phd and need a masters for that! at the moment it just seems like an insane amount of work on top of the insane amount of work i already do so im not really enjoying it but maybe it will get better!? xxx

1) MA Creative and Life Writing, Goldsmiths.

2)Just the one.

3)I lived with my parents.

4)With my third year undergrad student loan, I lived at home that year and as I am basically a nicer and I hope more attractive modern version of Scrooge I hardly spent any of it. Of course then I didn't have much left to actually 'live off' so my social life was almost non-existent but I didn't have time to party a lot anyway!

5)Yes and no. I made several new writer friends, and we're still meeting weekly to critique each others' work, it was great for my writing in general. However, I did think that I would be able to do another taught Masters at some point in the future when I worked out what I wanted to do with my life other than write, and then the government brought in ELQ so I'm kind of stuck. There's no way I would ever be able to save up the ten grand or so and then blow it all on another MA.

6)Psssh! You don't do creative writing degrees for a career! Since finishing the course I have been unemployed except for a couple of months when I worked at a bookshop. I think I'd like to go into academia eventually, but I'll have to save up and do a lot of self-educating before I can do a PhD.

Another librarian here! Doing an MSc in Information Studies at the moment, which just seemed like the next step because of my experience so far. How is it being funded? By deciding not to put down a deposit on a house after all! Career-wise? You have to have this under your belt to progress, so it will definitely help get the role I want. What are you thinking of doing?

I'm hoping to study social or public policy. I studied politics and sociology at undergrad so it seems like a progression that makes sense, and it's an area I'm really passionate about!

well,
1) What did you study and where? MLitt in Early American History, University of Dundee
2)How many courses did you apply for? just that one
3)Did you live at home or in the place you were studying? I did it part time, stayed at home for a bit, lived in a flat for a bit
4)How did you fund it? parents
5)Are you glad you did it? No.I should have put more thought into it
6)Have you found it useful career-wise? No. Mine generally leads into a PhD and that's not what I want.

So! I'm going to do another MLitt this year, at St Andrews in Museum and Gallery Studies. Funding-wise, SAAS might be able to pay my tuition fees but there's limited funding. If not, I'm going to take out a career and development loan but if that falls through, my folks have (reluctantly) agreed to pay for it. I also want to continue to work part-time throughout and extend my overdraft to the maxmium! Hopefully once I'm done with this, I'll actually be able to get a Proper Job! Fingers crossed!

I just got into a course which I will be starting in September...

1) What did you study and where? MA Contemporary Art Theory, ECA
2)How many courses did you apply for? Just this one
3)Did you live at home or in the place you were studying? I will be living with my boyfriend
4)How did you fund it? Hopefully a combination of part time job and some funding
5)Are you glad you did it? I am glad that I took the time aside to apply as I'm now 3 years out of my undergraduate degree and have had a lot of experience, but have only made over minimum wage in one of my jobs...
6)Have you found it useful career-wise? Hoping that I will either feel like continuing on to PhD level, or start my own business afterwards but I don't have huge hopes for it improving my career prospects. I would be happy if it improved my focus a bit.
